Cataract Surgery Second Opinion

Should I get a second opinion for cataracts? Explains why a second opinion is often a good idea when diagnosed with cataracts.

Cataracts affect millions of people each year. Cataracts occur naturally over time and tend to grow worse as we age. When diagnosed with cataracts many people are left with a lot of questions. Which lens is best for me? Why did I develop cataracts? What should I do now?

When diagnosed with cataracts it is often a good idea to get a second opinion. Rather than to confirm the cataracts, the second opinion should seek to confirm what the surgeon is recommending. There are many types of cataract surgery lenses, and some surgeons tend to develop a “favorite” lens. While this may be beneficial for the surgeon, in terms of becoming a master of a given lens and technique, this may not always benefit you as the cataract patient. For this reason, it is often best to obtain as much information from your surgeon as possible as to why the lens they are recommending is best for you. Once this information is obtained, it is wise to go to a different cataract surgeon and ask for their opinion. It is not always necessary to say upfront that you are seeking a second opinion. It should be noted that insurance (and other medial payers) may not cover second opinions. Make sure to check prior to scheduling a second opinion appointment.

By seeking a second opinion, patients are often better able to understand why a given lens is best for them (or is not best!). By combining the recommendations patients can determine if they are receiving the best recommendations for them. If the second cataract surgeons recommends a different cataract lens, ask them what the specific differences are between the lens you were originally recommended and the newest lens being recommended. It is also best to keep in mind that premium lenses, as these lenses are called, are different prices. This is another factor to consider when obtaining a second opinion.

It is often a good idea to get a second opinion when diagnosed with cataract. If only to reassure you, a second opinion can help in the decision making process. Always seek advice on specific medical questions with a licensed medical provider.
